yes a thermal chip has a thermometer on it, so if/when they are ill the vet just has to scan them and they get their temparature much nicer than shoving it you know where

Normal chip £20 and a thermal one( so they don't need temparature doing per rectum) was £25. Oscar was lucky and got thermal one!!
