Hey forum people,
After careful consideration we have decided to change Gracie & Maddie's dry food from Bakers too a better brand; we would appreciate your recommendations for a new food to feed them please.. :D
I would be grateful if you could also let us know how much you roughly pay for the food too please, as cost will come into consideration here..
Thanking you in advance.. :D

I don't feed dry, I feed naturediet (hypoallergenic and natural) with Burns mixer. It's about 90p a pack from pet shops but if you buy in bulk online it works out to about 68p. Bella eats 2/3 of a pack per day but she's a miniature. 12.7kg.

If you want to stick to dry then Orijen seems to be the favoured brand on here, I believe it's more expensive but you need less of it. x

My parents feed their two labradors Arden Grange dog food - http://www.ardengrange.com/pet-food/adult-dog-food.asp

(For a LOT of pet food, check ebay before you buy it in the shops... £42 retail, £35 ebay inc delivery :) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ARDEN-GRANGE- ... 500wt_1054 )

They also throw a human cod liver oil tablet into the food bowl for the dogs' coat and joints.

Edit - Jean I see you live in the Wirral, do you mind me asking where you got Bella from? She's a beauty and I'm looking for a Doodle :)

I have been feeding Beta - but it's proven to give them the runs and really stinky doo. Although they love the taste of it. I will soon be moving on to Lathams as the ingredients are good and it is reasonable priced. (£20 for a big bag) :D
I have been topping their food with Nature's Diet :)

We feed Green Dog, I've used it for fosters too and never had any tummy problems from it. It is also supposed to give natural protection against worms and fleas, and although we don't rely on this all the time, we have never had any issues.

Soleil has Harringtons now but was on James Wellbeloved. She tends not to eat her full portion though of any type of food :?

I would say, look at the ingredients of any food you are considering. Avoid any where the first ingredient is not a named meat (i.e. corn, rice, maize, or meat), and choose one where the first ingredient is chicken or beef or lamb etc. Avoid meat by-products or derivatives, but meal is OK as long as it is a named meat source (e.g. chicken meal). If you are choosing one with rice, try and go for one with brown rice. Then just go for the best one you can afford. Any diet can be improved by giving your dog a tin of mackerel on day, and egg another day, and so on.

Hi
I give Peggy Eukanuba lamb and rice. We call it Chris Eubank!
It cost me £45 for 15kg
We changed from wainwrights turkey and rice as it was causing looseness!!
I think it is trial and error.

Wilson has Barking Heads, its about £38 for a huge bag or £9 for small bag
it comes in 3 flavours too
we add mackerel / sardines / egg/ chicken / veg etc
the end result is always "pick-up-able"

I have two dogs and when they were on Orijen I used to buy 2 bags for about £100 and then they also had 4 cases of Natures Diet on another order for £50. I have one 25kg dog and one 40kg dog and £150 of food lasts them 3-4months, works out at just over £1 a day for 2 dogs. That amount I think is pretty similar (amount of food not cost) for other high quality brands and is the same for TOTW and Fish4Dogs which are other foods they have tried.

Just spotted this on another forum:

http://www.mpmproducts.co.uk/acatalog/Multimedia_PC.html

Its Applaws large breed dog food (they have just started making it as previously their kibble was only suitable for small dogs as it was tiny). It looks very good value for the quality, and is 75% meat - very similar to Orijen.

Feeding raw probably costs slightly less for Ted.

Follow Bids advice when choosing a food and you wont go wrong, meat should always be the first ingredient - but be aware that some companies try to make it look like their is more meat by spltting up the maize/wheat content into different things. Very confusing but I am sure you will find something suitable. Wainwrights is a good one from PaH if you only want to shop at actual shops.

Thankyou for all your prompt replies. My OH was looking at the Eukanuba again, as this is what Gracie was fed on from the breeders. Anyone got any thoughts on Eukanuba??
Also.. Do most of you buy your food online?
Daise xx

Alfie used to eat Bakers for well over a year and now has orijen. He is 30kg.
He was meant to 600grams of bakers a day  and cause i could only get small bags it worked out to £7 per week.
Orijen is only 300 grams a day, you can buy larger bags and it still worked out at £7 a week, no toppers etc he wont eat them.

Just a warning Bakers has a lot of sugars in them so its like weaning a toddler of chocolate. Also if your new chosen brand is smaller portions your doods will be hungry and need filling with extra veg, then slowly cutting it back till they get used to a smaller bowl.

It was the best move i made but certainly not the easiest but well worth it. :P

I feed a mixture of raw, and No Grainer by CSJ. CSJ do a wide variety of dry food, if you look at their website they tell you which foods are recommended for which dogs. Also, if you contact them, they will usually send you a variety of free samples to see what your dog likes. Ceri is really helpful in helping you find which suits your dog best, and the prices are really reasonable. No Grainer - as the name implies, has no grains at all and is really suiting Sadie brilliantly, on a 70% raw 30% dry diet. We feed the dry portion of her daily rations as treats on her walks and for training generally. xx
