hi I have two labradoodles Oscar who is an 18 mnth cream/golden boy and Lilly who is just over 4 months and black. They are both F1 scruffy. When we got Lilly we were told that she was breed the correct way mother a labrador and father a poodle, she does not tend to smell and doesn't shed too much, Oscar parents were the other way around he sheds like there's no tomorrow and does tend to smell. I know the labradoodles vary alot but wondering if anyone knew if this is true.

Hi
it makes no difference which way round your doodles parents were - the variations you are seeing in their coats is purely down to the fact that they are a in effect a cross breed and as a result these differences will occur... (it could just as easily be your doodle that has a poodle mum that is doing all the shedding).

Hi there
I think as Sharon says it makes absolutely no difference, it purely depends on the individual pup! I have heard (by american breeding) that the poodle mother tends to produce the fuller coats & although in America this seems to be the case, there is really no proof of this, I think it's just a myth!
You put a Poodle to a labrador & end up with a crossbreed (a labradoodle) & at the end of the day this particular dog could end up flat coated or long coated, minimal shedding or heavy shedding regardless of what breed mum was! We are in the very early stages still & what you get is indeed a gamble only the breeder can tell you which way they think the individual pup will turn out!
Hi Gunner- no, I don't think there is a correct way to breed an F1, obviously if you had had a small lab bitch then you would not breed her to a huge standard poodle dog!

More obviously a SP bitch can be very fine and they are not built to produce offspring with large heads, Im particularly I'm thinking of Labradors from show lines. Labradors weigh generally half as much again as a typical SP of the same height.

Yes carole, obviously it can work the other way round too! as you will know (being a standard poodle owner yourself) the standard poodle can vary in height and build & with the labrador there are two different types (the working lab origionally the american bred and the show type lab as you mentioned- the english lab- more stocky & boxy head). What I was basically saying to Gunner is that breeders of first generation labradoodles need to pick puppy parents to suit size wise!
