Just returned from a visit to our former home in Orkney, the Island of Stronsay. A long drive from Manchester was broken by a 2 day stay a a really lovely guest house just outside Newtonmore, Crubenbeg House, massive ground floor room and Roza loved the extensive gardens. She was not allowed in the dining room and we could not leave her in the room alone, which we would not wish to do anyway. A couple of mile drive took us into Newtonmore, a charming small town where we were welcome in a very nice cafe on the main street, the Hotel was not so accomodating and it was a mistake going there. However a `Truck Stop` just outside town served better food , home cooked, and they made us welcome in the bar, albeit a little scruffy it had a good atmosphere. Highly reccomended in all ! The trip from the north of Scotland on the ferry was only ok because the weather was fair enough both outward and homeward to permit us to take Roza onto what was euphemistically called the `Sun Deck`on the Pentalina from Gills Bay to St Margrets Hope and no better on the North Isles ferry from Kirwall to Stronsay. The one and only pub on the Island is totally anti-dog, it is also the Hotel, if you have a dog , avoid !We only stayed for just over a week because of the difficulty in catching two ferries in the same day to get back to mainland Scotland. The weather was glorious on the return trip and we spent a couple of hours in the public bar and beer garden of the Hotel in Helmsdale. They did not serve food until 6pm but guided us to the local fish & chip shop which was `to die for`. Our trip back to Manchester was broken by a one night stay in Bankfoot at the Inn of the same name. Very Doodle friendly and the room was very large & comfortable with a massive bathroom. There was a charge for Roza, but well worth it, and she got to eat dinner with us.Very very welcoming and highly reccomended. Now back home and wondering where next!!
