Hi, the cost of neutering depends on weight. The vet refused to castrate Buster until he was 6 months but preferred to do it when he felt he was ready as he was becoming sexually active very young in development. Its not affected his character at all, more his appetite for food.

He must have been just 6 months when it was done and we paid around £150 in total including castration cost, elizabeth collar + 3 painkiller tablets. He would have weighed around 30-35 Kg. I think vet bills tend to be higher in the south east so possibly its better to shop around for quotes and then consider the pros and cons of changing veterinary pratices.

Hello

By the sounds of it your vet does seem to be a tad expensive. FYI we are in the East Midlands, which to some extent, does seem to be less expensive than in the south, just like house prices!

I am toying with having Polo done in the next few months, and was given a voucher from his vet's practice for a 10% discount off their standard price, which, I believe to be approx £120.00 (subject to weight of dog for anasthesia?) if done within the first 12 months of registering him with them. If I go to somewhere like the Dogs Trust, I am slightly concerned about the ethics involved and whether I may jeapordise my relationship with our vet for any other treatment that Polo may need in the future (or is this what they want me to think, after all, we are encouraged to shop around for NHS treatment- I am slightly baffled and bewildered!)

I had a quote from my vet to have Ivy spayed and was quoted £193 inclusive of everything , which I think is steep and we are in the east midlands  , so I am definitley going to look into Dogs trust , as in the NHS nowadays you can shop around for services/care and it shouldn't jeopadise the relationship you have with your vet.
