What is a good food to put on weight?

Post by Sarah Bevan » 13 Oct 2012, 19:43

Hi All,

The vet has been telling us on and off since we got her that she is underweight. She is on Burns Adult which has only 7% fat content, most other complete foods have more that that.

I have to admit she is a bit Ribby at the moment

Can anyone suggest a good complete food which would put a bit of weight on her. Should I think about a working dog food like CSJ?

She still eats poo, so I am wondering if she would be less likely to do this if she had a more satisfying meal.

Hi sarah :)
Luna is fed Simpsons Premium (the grain free one) it does mention its good for putting on weight.

http://www.simpsonspremium.com/sensitiv ... and-potato

it comes in a few different flavours too. ( i feed Luna about 40g less than what is recommended - thats just through trial and error)

Luna went to the vets the other day and he said her weight was ideal and was pleased with her in that respect.

good luck finding the right one for the beautiful Jessie :)

Burns is renowned for keeping dogs weight down, and for poo eating, so I agree a change would be good. I would also try adding a little lamb mince or goats yoghurt.

She is 22" and 15.2 kg at the moment, if I feed her extra cheese and sausage for a week she puts a bit of fat on, so it has to be the fat she needs.

Looking at the dog food composition on the Internet , it seems that the foods designed for working dogs has the highest fat content.
If she had one of those would it give her to much energy??
Any advice welcome

Usually food with Lamb in it is heigher in calories than ones with chicken.

Once a dog is spayed they gain weight gradually as the metabolism slows down. Vets usually like a dog to be on the lean side of average than overweight, especially when they are still growing.

A working dog food will definitely allow your dog to put on weight. keep up lots of exercise though as they will also need to burn off some of it. Had my two on it by mistake. they put on a lot of weight over a couple of weeks!!

That is my concern. Arden Grange has twice the amount of fan than Burns and half that of working dog food, I think we are going to try it.

You could buy the working dog and mix 2/3 working with 1/3 normal dry/wet dog food to see how it goes. You would only need to do this for about 2 weeks then if need be about twice a week to keep the weight up. Normal exercise should then be ok. If you have a very active doodle you may need to increase it. My doodle puppy is like skin and bone but can only eat fish. (has chappie- although an adult food- which is the only thing that does not give him a bad stomach) . He is in fact getting very tall and leggy!! Could be your dood is going the same way.
