I have just given Poppy a scratch behind her ears (something I do several times a day) and have found a lump in her neck.

It is about the size of a sprout and is hard. It is attached to her neck rather than her skin and I can't move it.
It must have grown so quickly as I didn't feel it at all yesterday.

She seems absolutely fine in herself and shows no pain when I touch it. Do I need to rush her to the vets? Any ideas of what it might be? Do dogs have glands in their necks?

I will second what Pixie's Mum has said. We found a lump more on the back of Vince's neck about 4 weeks ago, very similar to how you have described and over the weekend, typical

. Vet's visit on Monday morning and by then it was a little smaller. Vet confirmed a bite from something and was not concerned at all and it had pretty much gone within the week

. Keep an eye on it and perhaps phone the vet for advice before panicking (panicking gets you nowhere)

Vince doodle ...you will always find him in the kitchen at parties ......

because it came up so quickly I wouldnt be too alarmed - make an appt at the vet just to check it out (I do drive my vet mad but he is used to me and says dogs cant tell you anything)

Thanks for all your replies everyone. Just got back from the vets. It is a swollen lymph node which is hopefully down to a local infection, although he couldn't see any sign of one.

She has had a jab and has antibiotics for a week and hopefully it will go down.
He said that it is very large and there is the possibility of it being something more sinister.

I am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that the antibiotics work.

We will keep fingers and paws crossed too - vets always give you the worst case scenario

Fingers and paws crossed, let's hope it starts going down quickly so that you don't have to worry for too long.

Oh gosh how scary

As said, they like to prepare you for any possible bad news. Poor Boo with his rare kidney stones and high liver test results and £1300 later - nothing bloomin' wrong with him at all!
Dogs and cats have a high pain tolerance so can be fighting off an infection but not feel ill from it.
Big hugs till you can find out more xx

Thanks for all the vibes - they seem to be working!

The lump is definitely not as hard today and I think a little smaller although it is difficult to tell.

I am much more confident now that it is an infection rather than anything else.
She is back at the vets on Monday.
