First time insurance minefield

Post by karen 49 » 22 Oct 2011, 11:57

Hello,
It's cheeeky me asking for advice again.

In same position as Sarah and Dawn, looking for insurance.
Murphy initially insured with Pet Plan thro' breeder, so we have received usual offer one month free
Following bit of research now considering John Lewis, pet insurance.co.uk or sainsburys.
What are the terms and conditions i.e. small print which you need to consider. (e.g. do they cover a chunk out of you coffee table. lol)

many thanks

Karen

Hi, i was exactly the same. Pet plan wanted £45 a month off me, bearing in mind our last dog lived until he was 14 I dread to think what sort of premiums i'd be paying them by then!!

Anyway, in the end I went with Sainsburys - life long cover - £14 a month.

To be honest there are good and bad reviews about them all, you might as well pick one blindfolded!!
Best thing you can do is choose one to suit your budget I guess.

Hi Karen , I spent hours on this! I went with John Lewis in the end because they cover conditions on going as long as you renew- and the pot of money is replenished each year(lifetime) they were also very helpful on the phone when it came to explaining small print.
I think with sainsburys you get an amount per condition rather than per year - so once you have used it up you don't get any more.
I printed off the smallprint for about 8 policies before I made a decision, but until you make a claim you don't know if you have a good policy or not.
Not sure about accidental damage, we are covered for that on our house insurance.
Hope this helps.

Recently there have been some insurance companies pulling out of pet insurance, leaving people who had their policies high and dry - unable to get new policies elsewhere which will cover conditions they were claiming for, Lloyds and Halifax being one example, and Petguard another. The reasons given are that the underwriters would no longer cover them. I think therefore, if this is going to become a trend, one thing worth looking for are companies such as Petplan who are not underwritten by another company, and who deal only in pet insurance, and so are unlikely to decide not to include it!

John Lewis insurance is underwritten by AXA, so it is exactly the same cover.
