Just popped in to say that we have passed stage 1 of our assessment.

It was public places and reactions we were being marked on today.

We did ASDA, Wilkinsons, B&M and ASDA Cafe.

Doodles slipped up slightly when he went off a tad in the ASDA cafe to see what someone had but he was quickly corrected and didn't do anything just turned pulled a slack lead taughtish to sniff the air so it wasn't bad and hey he is part Lab what do you expect.

We had Lunch and he settled under the table very nicely, ignored people, buggies even someone dropping a ham sandwich on the floor   I was very proud.

He stayed under the table for the whole duration. Even the people in the ASDA Cafe commented on how good he was and thought he had been doing it for years.

Even said how proud he walks.

The assessor purposely struck up a conversation with someone to make sure he would settle when I was talking to someone and not bite the lead, whinge or cry or pester he laid down and went to sleep

tomorrow is public transport

Even been so scared that your dog would widdle in somewhere???? Jeez I was today, I thought if he wees in ASDA I will die but he was as good as gold

Congratulations Doodles, not that I ever doubted for a moment that you would pass with flying colours. Time for Mummy to write a training manual for the rest of us.

Hiya

Usually it does take a long time however I have two things in my favour

a) it is who you know in my case

and

b) it is the actual training of tasks that often takes the time and depends what you need them to learn.

A lot of people think it is pointless to teach your dog other things than sit down and come which I guess sometimes it is. Many dogs do get bored at training classes which I guess I am lucky my dog never did.

I taught him for fun at first to stop him ripping up my socks and eating my carpet and mobile phone instead of ripping up my socks and knickers put them in somewhere I want them and you will then be rewarded.

Hence my dog could empty the washer, take clothes off the liune, bring me a ringing phone, pick things up off the floor, find things, get the post etc.

Then before xmas I fractured/displaced my coccyx and already having diabeties this made things hard for me.

I couldn't even bend down to take my socks/shoes off hence where my dog came in.

So what he had been taught for fun 18 months turned into being a lifesaver for me living in a 3 story house having no kids or anyone. He would run upstairs and get things, empty my washer, get the post in, drag the shopping bags in from ASDA internet shop, put things away in my cupboards.

So you see the conditions that people need medical assistance dogs for they need to be taught which is what takes the time but my dog is already taught.

Never ever think teaching your dog to do something is a waste of time as you never know like in my case when you will need it.

You may be able to see in my foldable dog bowl thread I have a assistance dog jacket, these are not given out lighly and to just anyone. My id pass is government issued.
My dog next week is going on a easyjet flight as a passenger would do again not all dogs have this priviledge.

I will never ever regret training my dog how to do as some people think a waste of time things as he has now become my helper and carer, it is pretty sad when you have to sit and admit that one day you can't even bend down and take your socks off but hey your dog can lol
