hi Thanks for all the advice recently on buying a doodle puppy. I'm still confused on what coat looks like what so i think i'll have to find some kind of guide ! We have found a very local breeder though so we are a step closer. I'm wondering if anyone knows of this place http://www.wrenstud.co.uk/labradoodles.htmI rang the guy today and asked lots of questions. The only thing is that as they are a breeder the pups are raised in a mixture of indoors and outdoors and i'm not sure how good that is ? They are used to lots of noise though as they have lots of other animals. Is there anyone that does a 'secret shopper' type thing for phoning breeders and getting info about them for the inexperianced like myself. It's just that there looks like there are a lot of shoddy breeders out there and i'm assuming that if a breeders knows all about their dogs and labradoodles then that is a good start. Sounds like a cheeky thing to ask now i see it in writing but as they say if you don't ask.... Many thanks Marsi

My personal preference, is that I have never heard of them and they dont instantly appeal.
Although I think that poodle is a relative of Ben...uncle, cousin, something like that. The same breeding line anyway!

Being raised indoors and outdoors is fine as long as they are mixing with people/children too. rosie spent the first 3 weeks indoors, then moved outdoors to a big pen with a puppy house with heated lamps in and an outside area. The puppies were often taken into the breeder's house. She is absolutely fine in and outdoors, does love being in the garden though, sometime doesn't want to come in ! Good luck with your search!

We got Douglas from Wren Stud and he is absolutely gorgeous. It's a bit like South Fork from Dallas if anyone remembers that. The dogs and puppies were kept in a sort of outbuilding but it was very warm and clean, and both the stud dog and the two nursing bitches we saw looked very well and happy. We're not experts, but Douglas is generally healthy, happy and good natured. Poll

I would say that a puppy bred within the family home as part of the family is the ideal. I don't know anything about this breeder however during our search we visited a breeder (who coincidentally also bred horses) who also said her puppes were kept indoors and outside. It soon became clear that the puppies she showed us had never been indoors in their 8 weeks of life. I think that if a business is dealing with a large range of animals/breeds it could be very difficult for them to socialise the puppies. Why don't you go along to visit and see what your instinct tells you. Good luck. Its quite stressful getting it right but so worth it in the end.

Hi I have had a look at your post and the pics of the breeder etc and all the pups, and parents look in great condition and also their environment looks clean and tidy so my impression at first is good According to their site they hip and eye score the parents so make sure you get evidence papers of this, the pups coat can turn out all different from the same litter smooth like a lab or curly and fleecy more like a poodle.

My personal view is that there are good and bad commercial breeders; there are some wonderful small hobby breeders raising puppies in their own home and there are others with little knowledge who just happen to have a lovely family dog and decide to breed a litter without knowing anything about the subject.... My priority when choosing a puppy is health testing of the parents followed by good socialisation. Cleanliness should go without saying and of course the temperament of the parent dogs is important. The kind of questions that should be asked of any breeder are listed here- http://www.labradoodletrust.com/puppies.htmlA secret shopper exercise wouldn't really help, Marsi as there is no substitute for actually seeing the puppies with their mother and checking all documentation carefully. I have no direct experience of the breeder you mention but have looked at their site. Two questions I would want them to respond to; first, why are their dogs not elbow as well as hip scored and second, the section on the labrador puppies they are selling states that Sire and Dam are hip scored. On the labradoodle section it merely says that the Dam is hip scored. Why is this? Hope this helps. Katherine

Im on the many tears animal rescue website alot and if you know nothing about dogs its obvious that some of the ex-breeding bitches that they have sent in to the centre to rehome can be bred until they are exhausted.although some are only young when the breeder has finished with them and are fine..I would want to see pups with mum and be sure it REALLY is the correct mum for those pups. I went to Kimberlenes near Coventry when looking for a pup but found the whole place not to my liking there was just something about the whole setup,I knew within 5minutes of looking around I wouldnt be buying from them.My point is keep alert dont be swayed by anything they say to you, dont handle the pups(I loved Liz the moment she was in my arms) check age of mum incase shes being overbred does she look happy and healthy and keep on doing your research on health etc so you come over as someone could not be taken for a ride. On a positive note Lizzies dad was a Kertellas pedigree dog and she is lovely, she is more lab in her than poodle. Good Luck its worth the time and effort your putting into finding your pup it,ll be a huge part of your family for many years to come.Freda and Lizzie

I think it's very much up to individuals how much in side or outside they are happy with. Speaking personally, both my doodles were brought up entirely within the family homes of their breeders, and that is how I prefer it. I wanted to be sure that the mums are family pets, and not kept just for breeding, and if the pups are in pens outside part of the time then to me that would suggest that the mums are not primarily pets.

A bonus seeing TWO piccies of Lizzie IMO You sound like me Lizziesmum, I knew I loved Dorcas from the second I had her held in one hand to my chest at the owners house! Me and Steph never gave her back to him from then on and she never cried or appeared to miss her old home a bit When Steph handed her to me and said "what do you think" I said yep!, what I really meant was "just try to prize her from me!" LOL Dorcas creeps into bed with me (I know she shouldnt ) when Steph goes to work at around 4 am (she's an artic driver) and the feeling of wellbeing I have is un-describable, she is the apple of her daddies eye She puts her head on the pillow next to me and sleeps, with my arm around her, until my alarm goes off at 6! What a darling! Dave, Steph and Dorcas Doodle
