Labradoodles are wonderful, energetic dogs that reward their owners with boundless affection — but their distinctive coats and active nature mean they do need a little extra attention to stay happy and healthy.
Coat Care
The labradoodle coat ranges from loose and wavy to tight and curly, and most fall somewhere in between. Whichever type your dog has, regular brushing is essential — aim for at least three times a week to prevent matting, paying close attention behind the ears, under the armpits, and around the collar. A slicker brush followed by a wide-toothed metal comb works well for most coat types.
Professional grooming every 8 to 12 weeks keeps the coat at a manageable length and gives a groomer the chance to check ears, nails, and paw pads at the same time. Many owners opt for a teddy bear trim, which keeps the coat neat while preserving the breed’s characteristically fluffy appearance.
Bathing
Bathe your labradoodle every four to six weeks, or sooner if they’ve had an adventurous muddy walk. Always dry the coat thoroughly afterwards — a damp coat left to dry naturally can lead to skin irritation and that tell-tale wet dog smell.
Ears and Nails
Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections due to their floppy ears trapping moisture. Check ears weekly, clean gently with a vet-approved solution, and trim the hair just inside the ear canal during grooming sessions. Nails should be clipped every three to four weeks — if you can hear them clicking on hard floors, it’s time for a trim.
